Crowns

Crowns are a commonly used dental restoration for broken or damaged teeth. They are custom-made for each patient and create a natural and cosmetically-pleasing result.

Penwortham Dental’s practitioners are skilled in fitting crowns and have used this technique on number of happy patients.

Also known as caps, crowns are used for various reasons, including:

  • To protect a damaged tooth from breaking
  • To support a tooth that has been chipped or broken
  • To restore a weakened tooth to full functionality and to improve its appearance
  • Placed on adjacent teeth to support dental bridges
  • Used to protect dental implants

Types of crowns

At Penwortham Dental we use different types of crowns depending on a patient’s requirements. They can be made from the following materials:

  • Porcelain: This results in a natural look which is colour-matched to your teeth and is often used on front teeth. A porcelain crown is bonded to a tooth’s enamel which makes it hardwearing and long-lasting.
  • Gold: Commonly used on back teeth, gold crowns are strong and help to minimise the impact of surrounding teeth. This is a more traditional crown material.
  • Porcelain-fused-to-metal: These types of crown can be colour-matched to natural teeth for a cosmetically appealing result. Whilst they are not as durable as traditional metal crowns, the combination of materials is still long-lasting and durable.

The procedure

Your dentist will explain why you need a crown on one or more of your teeth following a thorough examination. Impressions will be made of your teeth in order to create the crown. In addition, impressions of your surrounding teeth will be made to ensure the crown will not affect your bite. A temporary crown will be put in place whilst your permanent dental restoration is created in a laboratory.

Prior to fixing the crown in place, your natural tooth will need some preparation. This might include reshaping your tooth so that the crown fits into place. At this stage of the procedure, the dentist will anaesthetise the tooth and surrounding gums to ensure you are comfortable and pain free.

How long will a dental crown last?

A crown can last from five to fifteen years if it is well looked after. Its durability depends upon your level of oral hygiene and the amount of wear and tear you expose it to.
